Carabello Coffee
Bella Aurora
Carabello Coffee and the Lovo family have shared a friendship for many years. We began using their coffee in our Tandem Espresso in 2016 and never turned back. We continue to use their coffee in our espresso but also source other micro-lots from finca Bella Aurora, including this coffee.
Luis Joaquin Lovo and his wife Marielo have an incredible passion for their home country of Nicaragua. Though they immigrated to the United States during the civil war in Nicaragua in the 80s, their heart was always to return. When they did, Luis picked up cultivating coffee on his family farm in hopes to help rebuild the community and the country.
Now Luis Joaquin manages all three of the Lovo family farms: Santa Theresa, La Pradera, and Bella Aurora. Luis’s approach to coffee production is scientific—influenced by his engineering background. He keeps meticulous records of rainfall, temperature, harvest yields, and even the amount of bugs caught in traps! Steady and calculated, the changes Luis makes to growing and processing are gauged by their correlation to cup quality.
In addition to coffee farming, Luis and Marielo started Fundanuse, a micro-loan program that's now one of the largest in the country. The program not only provides capital but also accountability for entrepreneurs and farmers. We love that we get to celebrate the Lovos' amazing work by sharing their coffee with you!
