Carabello Coffee
Guatemala Los Dos Socios
In 1990, Concepción Villatoro Matías purchased his farm which is located near El Chalum, La Libertad of Guatemala's Huehuetenango region. Finca Los Dos Socios is a 150 acre plot that Concepción has planted with several types of coffee including Caturra, Pache, Pacamara, and Bourbon varieties. The coffee plants have been placed under the shade of Gravilea and Chalum trees. In order to help with varietal and quality separation, the farm is divided into many small lots. In addition to owning the farm, Concepción manages it working alongside 5 employees.
The name Los Dos Socios is a unique one which translates as "The Two Associates." This is a reference to a parable on humility which goes a little something like this: "A guy said, to an old man, 'The sign above your garden says there are two partners here but I only ever see you working here.' The old man told him, 'The other partner is the one up in the sky. He commands the rain, he commands everything else we need, I just work here to care for the plants.'" The fact that Concepción chose his farm name referencing this parable speaks to his character. Though this man has devoted his life’s work, hard work, to farming, he really takes little credit for the work and presents himself as a joyful steward of the many gifts God has given him.
