Ethiopia Sidama Honey
The Qunqana washing station sits in the Bensa region of Sidama Ethiopia. Sidama produces the most coffee at the highest grades in the country. Factors such as high elevation, cool weather, fertile soil, and over 100 inches of rainfall per year contribute to the health and development of the coffee cherry. In Sidama, coffee ripens slower than any other region in Ethiopia.
Asefa Dukamo, Qunqana’s founder, grew up cultivating coffee alongside his parents. He now owns his own farm, Daye Bensa Farm, as well as 16 washing stations and 4 dry mills. Qunqana, also known as Asefa No. 1 and the “mother” station, is number one in capacity in the region. It collects coffee cherries from many small farms in the area. One washing station can serve hundreds of producers. Once the coffee is delivered, the coffees are blended into day lots which makes the coffee nearly impossible to trace back to a single farm. Yet, Qunqana's coffee has become reputable across the globe and has made the Qunqana station one of the most popular international coffee destinations in the region.
